An International Past

While ASICS® is a big brand in the United States today, it didn’t start that way. The company (originally called Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) was founded by Kihachiro Onitsuka in 1949 in Japan. It wasn’t until 1977 when the company merged with two smaller companies that ASICS® was born. The word stands for the Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano,” which translates to “You should pray for a healthy mind in a healthy body.”

While ASICS® basketball shoes were introduced in 1950 and marathon shoes followed in 1953, it wasn’t until 1955 that the first wrestling shoe was introduced to the market. This first shoe used nylon in the upper, had hidden metal eyelets to prevent injury, and included ventilation holes in the toe.

That first shoe laid the groundwork for some of ASICS® most popular wrestling shoes today, such as the Aggressor and JB Elite models.
