It is estimated that the majority of people walk and run with a neutral gait. That is, their outside heel is the first part of the foot to make contact, while the ankle remains aligned – a motion called supination. Most runners will pronate to a degree; their foot will roll inward a bit as it transitions from heel to toe. Other people may exhibit over-pronation, which is characterized by excessive inward roll. This foot motion can lead to uncomfortable conditions like tendinitis and shin splints. If you’re unsure of the type of gait you have, take a look at the outsoles of a well-used pair and check for worn areas. If the sole is noticeably worn on the inner edge, you likely over-pronate.
