Jordan Retro 12: A Legendary Look
One of the marquee sneakers in Jordan’s legendary arsenal is the iconic Jordan Retro 12. The original Air Jordan 12 debuted in the 1996-97 season and was historic from the very start. It was the first Air Jordan shoe under the Jordan Brand after Jordan officially became a Nike subsidiary.
The history doesn’t stop there. Although MJ narrowly missed out on the MVP award that season, he got his revenge later in the season by downing Utah for his fifth title and fifth Finals MVP award. The success of that season propelled the Retro 12 into stardom, especially the iconic red-and-black colorway that would become one of Jordan’s most sought-after shoe.
The now-famous Flu Game produced one of Jordan’s most iconic moments in a career full of iconic moments. Before a pivotal Game 5 in the Finals, Jordan came down with a stomach virus. After being bedridden for most of the day, Jordan somehow got out of bed just over an hour before game time. Despite the illness, Jordan poured in 38 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in a winning effort. After the game, MJ collapsed into a teammate’s arms, creating the legendary image that cemented the Flu Game in viewer’s minds and in sports history.
Jordan wore a pair of red and black Air Jordan 12s during that historic game. Now dubbed the Retro 12 ‘Flu Game,’ the shoe is one of the most popular Retro 12 colorways and one of the most popular shoes in the whole Jordan collection.
The Retro 12 has grown into one of the most beloved Retro sneakers of all time. The history behind the shoes, including the legendary season, iconic moments, and its representation of the birth of the Jordan Brand make it consistently one of the hottest releases on the shoe market.
The shoe’s design itself also separated it from other Jordans with a truly unique look. The upper was designed to resemble the Japanese Rising Sun flag, and the end product had a timeless quality that sneakerheads still love today. The shoe is also incredibly durable and provides great ankle support, which made it a big hit as an on-court sneaker.
Now, it’s better known for its off-court appeal. The predominately leather material provides a luxury look that has made the Retro 12 a streetwear staple for years. Considering the history and popularity, we’ll probably see plenty of fresh Retro 12 sneakers drop for years to come.
