The popular story of the NBA fining Jordan for wearing the groundbreaking Black/Red colorway appears to be a myth, as his first game shoe actually was the Nike Air Ship. The NBA did warn MJ and the Bulls, however, not to wear such a colorway in a game because it would violate the league’s “uniformity of uniform” rule, so Nike seized on the opportunity to market the Air Jordan I as being “banned” by the league. Between Jordan’s striking rookie season and the buzz behind the “banned” sneakers, the shoes basically marketed themselves. 

The debut of the “Air Jordan I” was so redefining to both the on and off the court sneaker industry, Nike knew it had found something special. That legacy has endured from the Air Jordan I all the way through the Air Jordan XXXIII and beyond.

Jordan Branching Off

After years of success, Jordan officially branched off from Nike to become its own brand in 1997. Since, Jordan has successfully retro’d almost all the original models and signed some of the sports world’s most premier athletes such as hall of famers Derek Jeter (baseball), Roy Jones Jr. (boxing), and Randy Moss (football).

Classic Models

Jordan shoes have become a staple for sneakerheads off the court, as they carry a style and swagger that never fades. On the court, they are one of the most popular shoes worn by athletes at all levels. Each model represents a different time in the legendary story of MJ.

Different variations and collaborations breathe unique life into new pairs of J’s. For example, Jordan teamed up with longtime filmmaker and collaborator Spike Lee to create the Air Jordan Spiz’ike. This shoe used pieces and designs from six Air Jordans – the III, IV, V, VI, IX, and XX. This shoe was a tribute to the Mars Blackmon character played by Spike Lee in the early Air Jordan days.

Each Jordan release is as exciting as the last, whether it be a new model or a new retro colorway, Jordan continues to captivate the basketball community long after his retirement from the game.
