Back in 1924, Adi Dassler created a company with one goal in mind: to build the best line of athletic products the world had ever seen. His first major achievement came only four years after the company’s inception when Linda Radke laced up her adidas and won the first-ever Olympic Gold in the women’s 800-meter race.
And just eight years later, the brand supported greatness once again when Jesse Owens wore adidas throughout his historic quadruple gold medal victory at the 1936 Olympics.
The Birth of the Three-Stripes
While adidas was already at the forefront of the athletic gear industry, the company’s iconic logo was yet to be invented. Everything changed in 1949 when the first-ever Three-Stripes adidas sneaker hit the market. Only six years later, the shoes were donned by the West German national team, after which they played their way to a World Cup win.
Now, just over six decades after, the Three-Stripes soccer cleat still supports the world’s best, with footwear that includes the timeless adidas Originals Samba to the cutting-edge adidas Nemeziz Messi 19.1.
Already considered a sportswear staple, adidas gained new levels of fame when Run-D.M.C. dropped its hit song “My Adidas” in 1986. Sneaker culture had already been brewing around the world, but the trio's signature Three-Stripes tracksuits, adidas Originals Superstar sneakers, and song lyrics made the brand synonymous with cool. From then on, adidas sneakers and apparel would remain at the visual forefront of pop culture.
Nods to this hip-hop moment are still seen in recent releases, such as the adidas Tiro 19 Pants and the adidas Originals Washed Bucket Hat.
While adidas is often referenced in rap songs and in collaboration with pop culture’s biggest stars, the brand’s core mission has never wavered, which is to help athletes get to the top of their game.
