The Special Six
The Jordan 6 is a particularly special Air Jordan silhouette. Originally released in 1991, Michael Jordan wore these sneakers on the way to his first-ever championship, cementing his on-court legacy. Perhaps it also foreshadowed the number of titles — including MVP — that Jordan would win while wearing these sneakers.
As with many of the most famous Air Jordan sneakers, Tinker Hatfield was the architect, adding a heel tab inspired by the spoilers often seen on the backs of sports cars. The look was meant to convey powerful speed but aside from that, these spoilers provided easy slip-on and slip-off capabilities. For boys, this beneficial aspect can’t be overstated.
As Jordan’s legacy got its start during this 1991 season, the Air Jordan 6 became the last of its kind to feature Nike branding on the outside of the sneaker, marking a new chapter of his legacy. It also serves to give the Air Jordan 6 a stylish retro feel as the sneaker's post-original release, Jordan began to be defined as its own iconic brand.
Just as this sneaker marked a turning point in MJ’s career, the first-ever retro edition of the sneaker marked the turn of the millennium, released in 2000. The next retro editions would come much quicker, in 2002 and 2006. Fortunately, due to high demand, Jordan hasn’t stopped releasing them since.
