Different positions require different types of football gloves. Linemen should look for gloves that are heavily padded and provide wrist support. Receivers, running backs, linebackers and defensive backs should purchase flexible gloves that have some tackiness (stickiness) to them. It is very important whichever brand of football gloves you purchase that they are both NFHS and NCAA approved and meet the NCAA requirement that specifies only certain shades of grey can be used on the field.

Skill positions like wide receiver and running back cannot afford to drop a single ball because it could be the difference in the game. They use football receiver gloves that are thin and come with tactified leather palms for extra grip, an important feature whether the tackiness is part of the material or where the grip is applied as a post-production process.

Lineman should look for football gloves that are heavily padded on the top (back) of the hand and provide wrist support. Many lineman football gloves are designed to prevent a player from hyper-extending his fingers, usually will have extra heavy palm and backhand padding for hitting protection and may have an oversized wrist wrap for added wrist strength and protection.
