Let’s face it – some styles never fade, and that definitely seems to be the case with the vulcanized skate shoe. First made famous in the early ‘70s for its sticky sole and simple look, the vulcanized shoe is in demand once again.
Simply put, “vulcanization” is the process of merging a rubber sole with a shoe’s upper. The process, much like the look and feel of the shoe, is pretty cut and dry. The trend, on the other hand, seems to have more meaning.
While the vulcanized styles of the ‘70s and ‘80s gave skaters more grip and board feel, they also gave way to breaks and bruises. This resulted in the trend toward the more technical skate shoes of ten years ago.
So why is the trend back? Are today’s skaters gluttons for punishment or could this trend be saying something more? By going back to the beginning – a time when breaks and bruises served as a skater’s war wounds – are skaters seeking more authenticity? Something to ponder.
