Baseball Cleats
Quality baseball cleats are designed to give you the traction and support you need to perform at the highest level. Baseball cleats come in four variations: molded, metal, interchangeable and turf. Unlike other sports, baseball cleats are chosen by personal preference and turf type rather than by position.
Cleats differ greatly depending on what surface you are playing on. Metal cleats have a permanent metal spike configuration and work best on extremely hard, natural surfaces. Molded cleats are made with a TPU spike plate with permanent studs that are appropriate for a variety of surfaces.
Interchangeable cleats let you change your cleats between TPU and metal studs depending on your playing surface or when your cleats become worn.
Turf outsoles have grooved rubber bottoms for traction on concrete or asphalt. They offer the same benefits as cleats but with a flexible, rubberized bottom instead of the unforgiving metal or molded cleats.
Choosing the right baseball shoe for your game depends on your performance level. Many elite players seek cleats with special performance features because they are driving for better stats and outcomes. Entry-level players are best suited for quality, economical cleats until they become more familiar with the game.
Metal Baseball Cleats
Metal baseball cleats are used by high school to professional baseball players. Metal cleats dig deep into soft ground, allowing for quicker starts, swifter stops and more precise pivots. While they can’t be replaced, metal cleats offer the best traction on grass and hard surfaces.
Before wearing metal baseball cleats, make sure that your league allows them. If your league approves metal baseball cleats it is wise to take advantage of them, for they offer the best traction for lateral movement. If you’re not sure of your league’s rules, we advise that you ask before wearing metal baseball cleats on the field.
Molded Baseball Cleats
Molded baseball cleats have studs that are most often rubber, TPU or hard plastic. These studs dig into the playing surface to give you traction and stability, and are made as part of the outsole so they can’t be removed. Molded baseball cleats are very easy to maintain.
Because of this, molded baseball cleats are the most popular choice for first-time baseball cleat buyers. All baseball leagues and organizations allow molded baseball cleats for play.
Proper maintenance includes keeping an eye on the stud wear. Studs wear slowly, often affecting your performance.
Interchangeable Baseball Cleats
Interchangeable baseball cleats feature metal and TPU that are designed to screw in and out so they can easily be replaced. This allows players to use the appropriate cleat for various field conditions. Interchangeable baseball cleats come with metal and hard plastic or rubber spikes. Some leagues do not allow the use of metal spikes for safety and surface maintenance reasons. By wearing an interchangeable baseball cleat you can simply replace the metal spikes with rubber or plastic studs as needed.
Trainer Baseball Cleats
Baseball training/turf shoes are similar to other baseball shoes, but they have a bottom that can be used outdoors and on gym floors. Turf / training baseball shoes are very versatile and can be used for workouts, batting practice, gym practices and turf play.
Note: Coaches often favor the versatility of baseball training shoes, and therefore these shoes are often called “coaches shoes.” If you are a coach looking to purchase baseball shoes, we recommend buying training baseball shoes
Womens Softball Cleats
As of January 1, 2008, female high school softball players are allowed to wear metal baseball cleats and metal toe plates for the first time. Metal cleats offer deep penetration into soft ground, providing the best traction on grass or hard surfaces and preventing slippage on bases. Women's Softball & Fastpitch cleats.
Youth Baseball Cleats
Youth baseball cleats share most of the same features as the adult baseball cleats and are available in youth sizes 1-6. Kids will often wear the same cleats for all field sports, but this is not advisable, for it can reduce the child’s performance while increasing the chance for injury.
Baseball cleats are designed to enhance lateral movements, which helps decrease the time it takes to change a body’s velocity. Baseball cleats also provide a stronger side structure, helping to prevent ankle injury. Because of this, make sure your child uses the appropriate cleat for their sport.
Replacement Baseball Cleats
If your baseball cleats have the capability of changing out the spikes, it is important to keep your baseball cleats as new as possible. Rather than replacing your baseball cleats completely, consider replacing your spikes with new ones. Replacement baseball cleats tend to wear slowly, so it will be more difficult to notice a change in your performance.
It is wise to acquire replacement baseball cleats at the time of your shoe purchase. This provides you with extra cleats for all weather conditions as well as confidence that your replacement cleats will fit.
