Winner's Attitude

"I like facing the best in the league. To be the best, you've got to beat the best." It’s that kind of mindset that has elevated Justin Verlander above what he calls “middle-of-the-pack talent” growing up. Now he’s in Detroit dealing out fastballs that average a speed of 95 MPH. And he can do it long after the 100-pitch mark. Verlander walks out to the mound thinking about every batter as a one-on-one battle. “When I go out there, I believe I’m the best on that day.” He thrives on facing some of the best hitters in the league. Those batters get served a ridiculous mix of curves, change-ups and his shock-inducing fastball. This 6'5", 225-pound ace is a competitor in the most intimidating sense of the word. Lately he’s been too busy grabbing K’s to worry about pressure or expectations: “If you expect greatness, greatness shouldn’t surprise you.” This year he took the AL Pitching Triple Crown and knows that, “When you get hot at the right time, you never know what could happen.
