Ten Ways to be a Better Baseball Player
by Cheryl Mathis
1. Stay active in the offseason. Participate in other sports. Coaches want athletes, not just ball players who stay fit during the season. Focus on making yourself a better athlete for life, not just for baseball, and you will naturally improve your performance.
2. Warming up before a game is so important. Don't concentrate on throwing the hardest pitch or the fastest swing – focus on range of motion, on activating your core and your muscles. Your body is a car in winter. It needs to warm up a bit before it can run well.
3. When you're on deck, don't just swing your bat to warm up. Check on what the pitcher is doing. What are they throwing? Are they hitting their targets? If you have a general idea what to expect, you can set yourself up for a better hit.
4. Watch the pitcher closely throughout the game to observe their behavior in pick-offs. Are they paying any attention to base runners? Are they aggressive? Observation can mean the difference in getting a steal, a run or even winning the whole game.
5. Don't just spit sunflower seeds on the ground while you're in the dugout. Watch the opposing team's outfield. What players are the most aggressive? Which players seem to be napping? Are there play patterns? The more you know, the more you can adjust your style to take advantage of their weaknesses.
6. When you're at the plate, it's not just about standing there and hitting the ball. Check out the lay of the field to spot a gap in coverage. You could turn a single into a double if you can aim at an empty spot.
7. Put pressure on the defense. If you see a grounder, start running. Make them have to switch their focus to tag you.
8. Make the easy plays look easy. Develop your skills to the fullest with basic drills. When you're perfect at the easy stuff, the more difficult plays will come easier.
9. Be aggressive in the outfield. Don't wait for ground balls to reach you. Go after them. Develop quick feet so you can go where the action is as fast as possible.
10. Take criticism well. There's always room for improvement, and someone from the outside might be able to spot ways for you to tweak your movements to be more efficient. Don't take it personally. You are training your body to be a better ball player, and nobody is above some helpful advice.
