The world of basketball changed forever in 1982. At the time, Nike basketball shoe designer Bruce Kilgore envisioned a court shoe that would deliver an ample amount of ankle support, heel cushioning, and dependable traction targeted to key zones. From this vision came the Nike Air Force 1.
What started as a revolutionary on-court style, quickly evolved into one of the most iconic sneakers of all time.
Nike's Air Force 1 was the first shoe of its kind. After nearly three years of trial and error, Kilgore figured out how to incorporate a cushioning Air-SoleŽ unit into the missile construction. This technology initially debuted in the Nike Tailwind, a 1970s running shoe. He then paired the cushioning unit with a supportive leather upper with mesh covering the toe-cap and side panels to allow for ventilation. A rubber outsole detailed with an innovative circular traction pattern sits below.
Soon after, the Air Force 1 hit the hardwood on the feet of Nike's initial 'Original 6.' This group consisted of Moses Malone, Jamaal Wilkes, Mychal Thompson, Bobby Jones, Michael Cooper, and Calvin Natt. Although its 'Original 6' joined forces and offered a professional endorsement, the major contributing factor behind the success of this shoe existed in its appeal to the hard-core street ballers and trendsetters on the East Coast. The message of this groundbreaking shoe quickly spread up and down the Iᇳ and ultimately the rest of the world. Eventually, the mesh was replaced with perforated leather for a more durable fit yet the mid- and outsole remain true to its roots.
The Air Force 1 is a coveted style still today, both because it pioneered the way for innovative footwear design and for its ability to work as a premier canvas for a variety of colors, textures, and designs. This Nike icon is more than a sneaker; it's a staple for any authentic sneaker collection. This shoe has been on the market for more than three decades. During that time it has taken on over 1,800 different designs. From artist collaborations to celebrity sightings, the Air Force 1 has the ability to attract attention from collectors of all ages. It doesn't matter if you're an OG collector from the ྌs or a newcomer to the game, this is a sneaker that can travel through generations and come out on top.
